There are some verses the Jehovah’s Witnesses think back up their positions on God. One of these is Deuteronomy 6:6: “The Lord our God is one Lord”. Their argument is that there is only One who is God. The term ONE is not the word in the Hebrew that means what they would hope it would. If words have definitions, the Russellites have problems, if Mr. Rutherford, Mr. Russell, or Mr. Knorr had the polemic background or the scholarly work behind either of them to qualify them in Hebrew (or Greek either) one would have patience with their error, but they had neither! They would not know Hebrew from Latin if it met them in the road. They have admitted this under oath in sworn testimony in court cases. The Hebrew word echad means unity, see Genesis 2:24 while the Hebrew word yachid means one, like one, two, three, four, and beyond. “The Lord our God is echad Lord”, hurts their position because there is inferred there is more than one Jehovah (the Hebrew word for Lord). For example: my wife and I are one-this does not mean we are a single person, this means we agree, work as one, we are unified!! Psalms 83:18: “That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the Most High over all the earth.” Their play on this verse is that there is only One who is Jehovah, not three. The name Jehovah occurs some 6,823 times in the Old Testament, and is the most precious name among the Jews for God. In Genesis 19:24 the word says: “The Lord (Jehovah) rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord (Jehovah) out of Heaven.” If I can count one and one makes two! There are many names given to deity throughout the Bible, someone has counted at least 280 of them for Christ, alone! The name Jesus is an abbreviation for the word Jehoshua, which means Jehovah the Saviour”. “And God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our own image, after Our likeness…” Genesis 1:26. The Russellites will cry “fowl”, God was talking to angels!! Interestingly, we are not made in the likeness of any angel that we have been made aware!! In fact verse 27 of Genesis One reads: “So God created man in His OWN image, in the image of God…” I guess they forgot to read this verse?? “I, even I, have spoken: yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous. Come ye near unto Me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord God, and His Spirit, hath sent Me.” Isaiah 48:15-16 Again, if I can count here are three who make up deity!! Again, “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every nation, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Matthew 28:19 Again, this looks like three!! “There are three that bear record in Heaven; the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost. These three agree as One.” We have some erudite brethren who claim verses 7 and 8 are not in the original Greek scriptures. Tertullian, a second century leader in the Church of Christ wrote he had read the “autographed copies to the churches” and cites this verse. Cyprian of the 3rd century bears witness to the same truth. It was God’s responsibility to make sure of the verity of the Scriptures that they remain in tact; He has them in the text!! To me that settles the matter!! In Exodus 3:14: “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and He said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” The TERM for I AM is EHYEH, and is a present tense form of JAH, JEHOVAH. It is found in three places in the Hebrew, where it is translated as I AM. The origin of the word is from the verb TO BE. It denotes timelessness in existence of the One who was, who is, and who is to come, the first and the last, the Alpha and Omega. Let me introduce you to Christ!! Revelations 1:11, 17
