There He stood with the unleavened bread in His hands, next He was to take the cup. There had been a wedding performed that awaited the consummation which the ceremony of Adam and Eve was patterned. Christ had married the Church of Christ “from the foundations of the world.” Matthew 25:34 The “marriage supper of the Lamb” was coming, Matthew 22: 2-14;Revelation 19:7 and Christ would never have failed in this the greatest of all events in the history of creation.
We know this bread and cup were insignificant parts of the Passover remembrance as it is in any denominational setting. There was no significance. Being introduced during the rush of the evening, it now calls special attention for His Garden drew near. It was here, at this time the price of man’s soul came into clear view. Christ was looking with joy, Hebrews 12:2, as He brings to the attention of His trained band a remembrance they would commemorate every first day of the week. What had begun before the creation of the world was now coming into reality; for Christ, being married would mean the “bringing many sons into glory” to which He had dedicated Himself “before the foundations of the world.” Every Passover had brought this closer and nearer to fulfillment, every time the Lord had participated in the Passover the “rest of the story” had not been told. Now was the favorite time, now the event was to take place, and now the marriage to His beloved bride for which He had labored for 1000’s of years was coming to pass. As in type so the anti-type, Jacob (Israel) was getting his Rachel whom He loved!!
It is hard to imagine some who claim Christ as Lord deny Him the reality of His purpose as Christ. Ephesians 1:23 tells us the Church of Christ is ; “the fulness of Him that filleth all in all.” The Church of Christ is the entirety of Christ, the completion of the “mystery,” and all that God had ever meant “in Christ” when the grand council had convened and assigned the messenger of the covenant. Isaiah 9:6
As the connotation was physical to spiritual, so the Being it represented was The spiritual One who had become physical. Anyone in audience during this scene (and we all are present in the words of His inspired apostles) could NEVER appreciate what our Lord was introducing nor what this Supper would represent until He returns on a cloud!! Some say; “if I could have just been, there.” Yet they negate the observance without a guilt today. Like unfaithful Judas, they leave before the Supper is served!! Then, denominationalism which claims the highest of love from their souls for our Lord, obviate the very Supper that He plaintively requested. “Do this in remembrance of Me.” In fact, they have made fun of the Bride of Christ for 2000+ years as we “wait in remembrance!” They say; “we partake too often!” What is worse, the most scurrilous thing that can be done is for a member of the Body of Christ to partake of these emblems while in fellowship or membership of a denomination. Imagine a member of Christ Body partaking of the Lord’s Supper with or in the assembly of they who have never been married to Christ!! The apostle Paul writes: “Know you not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid. What! Know you not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? For two, saith He, shall be one flesh.” 1 Corinthians 6:15-16 What did the “two becoming one” mean? This is a part of the marriage vows which was a picture shown us in the Garden of Eden!! There is NOTHING equal to the Bride of the Lamb, the mother of all living for she is the realm of the saved!!
When He stood with the unleavened bread in His hands, He was calling eternity both as a witness and eternity as a possession of His beloved Bride!! Cast in the role as a King, God, the Father had declared the wedding ceremony of His Son, who could stop what God had begun?? “Why do the heathen rage and the people of earth imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against His Anointed… He that setteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure.” Psalms2:1-5 Christ had prophesied; “Behold, you despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which you shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.” Acts 13:41 “I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day; The night cometh when no man can work.” John 9:4
